Math Reflection

You will choose one unit from all the units we have studied in Connected Math. Those units are:
Prime Time
Bits ‘n’ Pieces I
Bits ‘n’ Pieces II
Shapes & Designs
Covering & Surrounding
Once you have chosen your unit, you will write the following:
  • why you chose that unit
  • what you learned from that unit
  • how the concepts in that unit impact your life
  • any other interesting information

If you did a project for your chosen unit and it already exists in digital form (meaning you have it on a flash drive, or can put it on a flash drive), you can link your reflection to that project (just make sure a copy of the project is in your portfolio folder! J), otherwise you will need to do an appropriate illustration for your reflection.

Math Reflection
I chose covering and surrounding because I like perimeter and area. The formula for perimeter is L+L+W+W. For example; if you had fencing and the length was 12 the other side has to be 12 also if we’re talking about rectangles. 12+12=24, and if the width was 9 the other side is also 9 kind of like a reflection. 9+9=18. 18+24 =42. 42 is the perimeter. How you find the area is LxW.
What I learned from this book is many things. For example, how to find the area and perimeter, Triangles and all that good stuff. As said in the recent question on the formula for Area and Perimeter is LxW for area. Perimeter is L+L+W+W. Therefore that is what we have learned in the covering and surrounding book.
It intersects with your daily life because if you want to be a construction worker as your career you will never get anywhere in your life if you don’t know how to find perimeter and area. Also if you are in the army and there are hostages taken in a huge building you need to find the area and perimeter and area to escort them out safely.
While Working on Covering and Surrounding investigation 1 included;
  1. Designing Bumper Cars
  2. Changing Area, Changing Perimeter
  3. Measuring Triangles
  4. Measuring Parallelograms
  5. Measuring Irregular Shapes and Circles
I like investigation 1 because I like bumper cars.

Covering and Surrounding
Elijah Richards

1. Area and Perimeter refer to shapes and tiles of a floor. Area is how much tiles or space is in the middle of something. Perimeter is how much surrounds the whole shape or floor. How you figure out what the area is, is by Multiplying the two sides of the shape for example;
5’’
2
5x2=10in

2’’How you find the perimeter is by adding all the sides up to see how much surrounds the shape for example;
5’’
5+5+2+2=14in

2’’
2’’

5’’
2. It is Possible for two shapes to have the same perimeter but different area such as this example;
3
2

These two figures have the same perimeters but different areas.
4. how you find the perimeter is you add the two opposite sides and the other two opposite sides.
